Good to know: - This is how the world celebrates Valentine's Day!

It's almost that time again - we're celebrating Valentine's Day. Some say it's the day of lovers, others say it's the day of all florists and chocolatiers. Many say that for us, every day is Valentine's Day and therefore we don't need an extra holiday for love. There are different opinions here too - better to celebrate love once a year than not at all, right? Has it really become an unspectacular matter of course and has it been quietly and secretly disappearing?

One thing is certain, 14 February is all about the most beautiful feeling of all - love! Whoever we share these emotions with, whether Valentine's Day is celebrated or ignored, whether you are an ardent supporter or a strict rejecter of Valentine's Day, this day is ultimately about making a loved one happy. But romantic ideas, gift guides and recipes are a dime a dozen. I went on a search for you and found out some exciting things about the day of love from different parts of the world.

Where does the custom actually come from?

There seems to be no consensus on the history of St Valentine's Day. However, various sources report that the day is based on the feast of St Valentine. According to one legend, Valentine's Day can be traced back to the Italian Bishop Valentine of Terni. He probably lived in the third century AD. Christianity as a religion was forbidden at the time, so couples were not actually allowed to marry in church. Valentine, however, married couples in defiance of the ban and then gave them flowers from his monastery garden. As punishment, he was executed on 14 February 269. According to tradition, however, the marriages he performed were auspicious and flowers are still given on this day today.

How is the Day of Love celebrated in other cultures & countries?

A love lock for eternity - Italy

Where could Valentine's Day be more romantic than in the land of love? In Italy, couples usually meet on bridges and place a love lock there. They write their names or initials on it. Both partners then think of a wish together, symbolically attach the lock to a bridge railing and throw the key into a river - so that their love will last forever. This custom has now been adopted by many other countries - and not just for Valentine's Day.

A day dedicated to friendship - Finland

Valentine's Day is completely different in Finland. The day is celebrated in the spirit of friendship . Finns send small gifts or cards - usually anonymously - to friends or people they like.

Handwritten love letters - England & the USA

In England, people traditionally send greeting cards, so-called "Valentine Greetings". This tradition goes back many centuries. In the USA, on the other hand, teenagers receive secret cards with messages of love.

One day each for men and women - Japan

In Japan, only women give gifts on Valentine's Day and express their affection in the form of gifts, especially chocolate. The more and the higher the quality of the sweet declaration of love, the greater the affection. However, there is now another public holiday in Japan: White Day. On 14 March , the men's world has to go all out and give women white chocolate.

Gifts that come from the heart - Germany

In Germany, flowers are the most common gift. But perfume and jewellery are also on the gift list. And this is despite the fact that, according to a survey, the most popular gift is a trip or a weekend away together. However, Valentine's Day does not seem to be very important in Germany. Around 40 per cent of Germans believe that there is no need for a special day like Valentine's Day to show their affection. However, I think everyone should decide for themselves and it doesn't matter what you give - the main thing is that it comes from the heart. And if you are thinking about giving a trip as a gift, then you've come to the right place on our website;) My absolute heartfelt recommendation is the romantic short trip with special Valentine's specials to the beautiful Sauerland.
